Web Tips - Transparent favicon.ico File

<< Go Back A Page

For those that don't know, Favicons are 16x16 pixel icons, that can optionally be put at the root level of your site. These are most often company or site logos. With the favicon.ico file in place, users who bookmark your site will see your logo next to the bookmark, instead of Internet Explorer's generic icon.

Here are instructions on how to make your favicon.ico file partially transparent:

  1. Create 16x16 image in your favorite graphics application.
  2. Save in .gif or similar format
  3. Open the latest version of Irfan View. Preferrably version 3.9x and above.
  4. Go to save your file in Irfan View as an .ico file.
  5. In the "PNG/PNM/ICO Save Options" Pop-up, check the box under ICO at the bottom that says "Save Transparent Color".
  6. Click Save.
  7. Now, click on the background color you want to be transparent.
  8. Upload your new favicon.ico file

Now, just add the site to your favorite to see the new icon.
